It’s Friday: Why the Cross?

His body shall not remain upon the tree, but shall be buried the same day: for he is accursed of God that hangeth on a tree: Deuteronomy 21:23

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Galatians 3:13

If any of our own people (a Christian) asks… why He suffered death on a cross and not in another way, Let them be told that no other way than this was good for us, and that it was well that the Lord suffered this for our sakes. For if He came Himself to bear the curse laid upon us, how else could He have “become a curse” unless he accepted the accursed death? And that death is the cross. For it is written: “Cursed is every one that hangeth on tree.”
St. Athanasius on the incarnation 4.25
